Review

Strengths:

  • Intriguing Premise: The combination of romance and thriller genres creates an engaging starting point, with themes of love, betrayal, and justice woven into the storyline.
  • Strong Technical Work:
    • Federico Cueva’s action sequences are gripping and well-executed.
    • A Sreekar Prasad’s editing ensures smooth transitions between timelines and genres, keeping the pacing engaging.
  • Veteran Performances:
    • R Sarathkumar and Kushboo Sundar shine as a grieving yet authoritative couple, elevating otherwise ordinary scenes.
    • Prabhu and Kalki Koechlin deliver nuanced performances that add gravitas to the narrative.

Weaknesses:

  • Problematic Romance: The portrayal of Arjun’s obsessive behavior is both confusing and troubling. While the makers attempt to address its toxicity, they fail to commit to either condemning or justifying his actions. This lack of clarity sends mixed signals about love and boundaries.
  • Unrealized Emotional Depth:
    • Akash Murali has moments of brilliance but struggles to convey the emotional complexity of Arjun’s turmoil.
    • Aditi Shankar impresses in lighter scenes but falters when the script demands greater emotional resonance.
  • Predictable Thriller Elements: Once the film shifts into full thriller mode, it follows a standard, seen-before template, undermining its initial promise of an engaging mystery.
  • Underdeveloped Characters: While the supporting cast delivers strong performances, their characters lack depth, leaving the audience wanting more from their arcs.

Highlights

  • Genre Blending: The smooth cuts between romance and thriller elements keep the narrative engaging, even if both genres lack depth.
  • Standout Moments: Scenes involving R Sarathkumar and Kushboo Sundar add emotional weight to the film, showcasing their strong screen presence.
  • Technical Strengths: High-quality action choreography and editing elevate certain sequences, keeping the audience engaged.

Verdict

Nesippaya had the potential to be a compelling multi-genre film, but its inconsistent messaging and reliance on clichés hold it back. The movie’s attempt to address complex relationship dynamics feels half-hearted, while its thriller elements fail to offer anything new. Strong technical work and veteran performances provide moments of interest, but they’re not enough to overcome the film’s lack of emotional resonance and narrative focus.
