Review

Strengths:

  • Bold Themes: The film addresses contemporary topics such as IVF, sperm freezing, gay parenting, and single parenthood with a refreshing, non-judgmental lens. A scene where friends casually discuss sperm freezing and parenting choices showcases this progressive approach with humor and relatability.
  • Strong Performances:
    • Nithya Menen shines as Shreya, blending elegance and emotional depth even when the script falters.
    • Jayam Ravi returns to his romantic roots, delivering a charming and understated performance as Siddharth.
    • Vinay and Yogi Babu add humor and warmth, rounding out the ensemble with lively portrayals.
  • Vibrant Cinematography: Gavemic U Ary’s frames capture the bustling energy of cities like Bengaluru and Chennai, evoking a similar vibe to OK Kanmani.
  • Relatable Characters: The flawed, messy, and human characters keep the audience invested, even when the narrative takes predictable turns.

Weaknesses:

  • Contradictions in Messaging: While initially celebrating Shreya’s bold decision to become a single parent, the film undermines her independence by portraying her parenting as inadequate to justify her romantic arc with Siddharth.
  • Rushed Subplots: Certain romantic subplots and sequences feel hurried, leaving some character arcs underdeveloped.
  • Convenient Writing: The script occasionally leans on clichéd resolutions and predictable twists, diluting the impact of its more daring moments.
  • Uneven Pacing: Songs like “Breakup” feel out of place and disrupt the narrative flow.

Highlights

  • Complex Themes with a Light Touch: The film balances heavy topics with humor and charm, making its characters and their dilemmas relatable.
  • Strong Chemistry: The interactions between Siddharth and Shreya, as well as the camaraderie among friends, anchor the film emotionally.
  • A Daring Finale: The film takes an unexpected and bold turn in its climax, redeeming some of its earlier inconsistencies.

Verdict

Kadhalikka Neramillai is a flawed but endearing exploration of modern relationships, anchored by strong performances and progressive themes. While its messaging is sometimes contradictory and its pacing uneven, the film’s charm lies in its relatability and its willingness to address unconventional ideas. It’s a breezy watch for those who enjoy lighthearted yet thought-provoking romance.
